If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed that I am pretty active on my IG stories and *very humbly* very good at them.
And I mean, TRUE (I know, I am feeling very humble today).
I got comments and messages like this all the time:
And here’s one secret hack that I tell my personal branding coaching clients to do every time they want to post on IG stories:
PROVIDE CONTEXT.
See, when I just started posting on my stories, it just looked like a random collection of photos without a cohesive story tying it all together: here I am drinking coffee, here I have a pretty view from my window and here is my dinner.
The problems with stories like this – however pretty they are – your audience lacks context.
They lack the context behind you drinking coffee, your pretty view and your delicious-looking dinner. They have no idea why this is important to you, what you are doing and thinking, what feelings you have posting this, and what key message you wanted to say.
But, if you want to use the same stories of a coffee, dinner, and a pretty view, you can turn it into something like:
- Photo of you drinking coffee + text on the screen: “I am so excited to dive into the workday today! I am onboarding a new coaching client this morning and I am SO FREAKING STOKED you guys. She is a real estate agent, and we are working together on building her personal brand so she can get more clients.”
- Photo of your view + text on the screen: “I am getting very busy in November with my coaching clients, and I surely cannot complain about it. Plus, who can complain with an office view like this!”
- Video of your dinner: “Work is done, now off to a date night with my girlfriend, trying this new restaurant! Food and drinks were absolutely insane!”
And just like that you told your audience that:
- you have a client
- you work with real estate agents
- you help with building personal brand online
- personal brand is used to get more clients
- you are busy in November
- you have other coaching clients
- you have an office view that you love
- you have an office
- you have friends
- you are going out
- you are trying a new restaurant
- you like to eat (and who doesn’t lol)
- you have life outside of work
- friendship is important to you
- you have an interesting life
We shared all these hidden key messages without actually saying “I like my friend” or “come buy from me” – but we just told the story of your day in the most strategic and intentional way for us.
So here’s what I want you to do (yes, I have homework for you!):
Review what you worked on this week and/or what happened this week that you want your community online to know about you. Take a few photos and videos or use the existing ones and post on your stories tomorrow talking about what happened this week.
This is exactly how we are mastering the art of storytelling and building connections with your audience.
PROUD OF YOU AS ALWAYS!
xx
Daria
